International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme

Mountainside Middle School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) World School.

MYP flag

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme is a highly acclaimed and internationally recognized educational framework which encourages students to become globally aware problem solvers who are creative, critical and reflective thinkers. In the MYP students make practical connections between curricula and the real world, and develop skills to live lives of purpose and meaning, helping to create a better and more peaceful world.

The MYP is a five year International Baccalaureate programme, split between two SUSD school sites, Mountainside Middle School (Years 1-3) and Desert Mountain High School (Years 4-5).

All sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Mountainside students are learners in the IB MYP Programme.

As such, they take courses in the eight content areas, required by IB for Years 1-3 at Mountainside: Arts (performing and fine), Design (STEM, Computers, Media et al.), Individuals and Societies, Language Acquisition (French, Mandarin, Spanish), Language and Literature, Mathematics, Physical and Health Education, Sciences. Mountainside has International Baccalaureate MYP trained administrators and educators, an IB MYP schedule and course catalog, and IB MYP policies in place which reflect the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programmme philosophy and requirements for all IB MYP World Schools.

Mountainside's IB Middle Years Programme is school-wide, wall to wall model, and Desert Mountain's program is a school within a school model. Students entering Desert Mountain in grades 9 and 10 may choose to register for the IB MYP Programme at DMHS for years 4-5.
