MYP Community Engagement

Community engagement is an integral part of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), empowering students to connect their learning to the world around them. Through Service as Action and the 8th Grade Community Project, students identify local needs, take meaningful action, and reflect on their impact. These experiences foster empathy, leadership, and a deeper understanding of their role as global citizens.

At Mountainside Middle School, students expand their learning and personal growth through community involvement embedded in classroom instruction, clubs, extracurricular activities, and school-wide initiatives. They are encouraged to make authentic connections beyond the classroom and reflect on how their actions contribute to the broader community.

All students are expected to engage in community action through one or more of the following ways:

  • Direct service
  • Indirect service
  • Research
  • Advocacy

The culmination of these experiences in Years 1 and 2 is the IB MYP Community Project, a required, student-driven initiative completed by all Year 3 (8th grade) students. This project allows students to apply their skills and passions to create a positive impact.
